Printer modules are printer assemblies from Infinite Peripherals Inc. usually consisting of a printer mechanism and controller board, and possible an autocutter and paper supply, integrated together on a single chassis. The benefit to the OEM is significant. The front end design time and therefore design cost is reduced, because only one printer module has to be mounted and connected to power and the system interface. Cabling between components are a part of the printer module, and therefore further reduce the equipment design time. Production assembly time is also decreased, as one item must be assembled rather than all the component parts. Finally, service is simplified. If a failure occurs in the printer, the service person can simply replace the complete printer module; it is not necessary for him to determine on-site whether the failure is in the control board, the printer mechanism, or the cutter.
While a printer module will cost a bit more than the cost of the individual components, the system cost analysis must include not only the components but the interconnections, additional bracketry, and assembly time when individual components are used instead of a printer module. In most cases the advantage will lie with the printer module.
In other cases, the available space will require use of individual components, which are available from IPC. And in the case of very large volume, the small savings in components plus assembly cost per unit, compared to a printer module, may steer the choice toward components.
